Trauma Informed Yoga Training (Module 2)
Yoga and Social Justice
This 3-day training is for yoga teachers, clinicians, bodyworkers, students and anyone wanting to understand the intersection of trauma and injustice. This experiential training asks you to take a deep dive into your own identity, positionality, and privilege while exploring how yoga can be a practice of collective liberation. (Those who complete Modules 1 & 2, in either order, will receive a basic certification in Trauma-Informed Yoga Fundamentals and will also have fulfilled the prerequisites for moving on to Modules 3 & 4).
Yoga Alliance credit will be available after completion.
Jacoby Ballard, a yoga instructor at 21st Yoga, will be doing a guest teacher segment during this workshop.
Full and Partial Scholarships are currently available for this training. Please visit this website to complete an application for a scholarship. Applications will be reviewed 2-3 months prior to the training and monthly until training begins. A Description of Module 2
Who can attend the training?
This module is open to people of all levels and all backgrounds; you do not need any specific training prior to attending, although we strongly recommend having a current yoga practice. This training is valuable to all folks interested in being more trauma and social-justice-informed. It may be especially useful for yoga teachers, social workers, clinicians, health care professionals, educators, community service personnel, and activists looking for more equitable & sustainable approaches to healing trauma, and for folks wanting to engage in trauma-informed and trauma-healing work from a social-justice lens.
What will I learn?
This module is a deeper dive into how trauma impacts us at the individual, institutional, and systemic levels AND how trauma-informed yoga teaching can help pave the way for more resilience and equity in our communities.
We explore how trauma impacts the brain and body while simultaneously looking at how systemic and institutionalized patterns of trauma and structural violence are at the root of social justice issues such as poverty, racism, ableism, and homophobia, among many others.
Through a socio-political framework we look at the conditioning that created and reinforces supremacist systems of oppression and inequality. We will also reflect on, and unpack, our individual locations in these systems. This is vital for yoga teachers and any space holder to do in order to truly serve their students.
This training draws on principles that call for union, truth, and work towards liberation for all. Throughout the training we use practices of yoga, embodiment, and mindfulness as tools to bear witness to and build capacity for transforming the trauma of our socially unjust society, rather than simply as a means to spiritually bypass them. We also teach how to use these regulation practices as a means to build greater resilience and to support healing and transformation within ourselves, our students, and our communities.

Exploring ways to use our practice and teaching to create social change
Ingrained in all of the TIY trainings is the deep connection between the mind and body and how trauma and chronic stress impact them collectively. The integrative and physiological framework for understanding this, along with relevant theory, tools, and practices, is explored in Module 1*
HALA KHOURI, MA, SEP, E-RYT500
Hala Khouri, M.A., SEP, E-RYT, has been teaching the movement arts for over 25yrs. Her roots are in Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga, dance, Somatic Psychology, and the juicy mystery of Life itself. Creative movement and honest self-exploration have always been sources of tremendous healing. Her calling to share this with others has been clear to her since she began teaching at the age of 16.
Hala holds a B.A. in Psychology (minor in religion) from Columbia University & a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. Her thesis was on using yoga and other complementary disciplines,
like eco-psychology & somatics, for self-empowerment to inspire a global shift towards peaceful, sustainable living. She is also trained in Somatic Experiencing, a technique focusing on trauma’s impact on the body-mind & ways to resolve it. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Depth Psychology with a specialization in Community Psychology, Liberation Psychology, & Ecopsychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute.
Hala is a co-founder of Off the Mat, Into the World, along with Seane Corn and Suzanne Sterling. This non-profit organization utilizes the tools of yoga & somatic practices within a justice framework to inspire people to be conscious leaders of change. Through the non-profit A Thousand Joys, Hala works with social workers & direct service providers, educating them on the effects of vicarious trauma and offering somatic tools to discharge & manage stress, creating a culture of wellness.
